“Contaminated drinking water in our schools” was the lead in line on our morning news while I was working out recently. I had gone to work out after sending our children off to another day at school.
I have to say, the catch line before the commercial break was enough to get my attention. After focusing on the latest car and laundry detergent ads, the perky news anchors came back on.
Of course, the news piece on contaminated drinking water, I was interested in did not come one for another seven minutes. I did get updated on several more current events. When they finally got to the story, it was about the fact that one in five schools has water that is below government standards for human consumption.
So, if after every gym class, that drinking fountain is spurting out contaminated drinking water that is unhealthy for my child, this parent needs more information.
There are strict government regulations on what public works facilities pipe to our homes and school. These facilities take what ever source they have access to, whether it be a natural occurring lake, reservoir or underground supply.
After pumping from the source, numerous chemicals and filters are added, deleted and used in order that the product pumped from the facility meets those government standards.
The problem then becomes what gets picked up between the processing plant and your mouth. How old are the pipes it travels through? Are there leaks or are contaminants leaking in?
Even if the water is delivered to your home or school in an acceptable form, what happens next? How old are the pipes in your home or school? What has built up in faucets? What about that disgusting water fountain everybody fights to get in line at after gym? When was the last time any of these things were checked and cleaned?
It is the quality or lack there of the delivery systems in many buildings, whether private or public, that is the cause of many of these health issues our young people face.
We as parents need to be aware of these downfalls. Just like no school district will tear down a building just because of old pipes nor will most of us sell our homes for the same reason.
Much less drastic maneuvers can over come the
